The 10 best elements of a Tim Burton movie

1) The Skittish Outcast - Burton has built his entire career on the twitchy outcast.

  • Edward Scissorhands – Edward Scissorhands
  • Beetlejuice & Lydia – Beetlejuice
  • Pee Wee – Pee Wee’s Big Adventure
  • Mad Hatter – Alice in Wonderland
  • Ichabod Crane – Sleepy Hollow
  • Willy Wonka – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
  • Ed Wood – Ed Wood
  • Sweeney Todd – Sweeney Todd

2) The Blonde Ingenue - The other side of the lady coin in Burton’s world. This director’s obsession with the innocent, blonde ingenue is so strong he’s be-wigged countless brunettes to get that perfect bleached from all sins look.

  • Sandra Bloom – Big Fish
  • Katrina Van Tassel – Sleepy Hollow
  • Kim – Edward Scissorhands
  • Johanna – Sweeney Todd
  • Vicki Vale – Batman
  • Daena – Planet of the Apes
  • The White Queen – Alice In Wonderland
My Favorite - Kim Basinger as Vicki Vale in Batman.

3) The Punky Rebellious Young Lady - The misunderstood ladies trapped in a world of their own. These rebels are often the voice of reason in Burton’s mad, mad world.

  • Lydia Deetz – Beetlejuice
  • Ari – Planet of the Apes
  • Carolyn Stoddard – Dark Shadows
  • Alice – Alice in Wonderland
  • Sally – The Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Emily – Corpse Bride

  • The bug-eyed witch in the woods – Sleepy Hollow
  • Barbara’s rips off her face! – Beetlejuice

The top 10 cities for travel in 2012 – from Lonely Planet

  1. London
  2. Muscat, Oman
  3. Bengaluru (Bangalore), India
  4. Cádiz, Spain
  5. Stockholm, Sweden
  6. Guimarães, Portugal
  7. Santiago, Chile
  8. Hong Kong
  9. Orlando, Florida
  10. Darwin, Australia

A few of the explanations:

Bengaluru - The undisputed Elvis of South Asian megacities, Bengaluru is in a class of its own when it comes to redefining flamboyance. Perpetually drunk on the good life, this South Indian metropolis packs in the best brews, the scrummiest cuisines, and the liveliest arts and music scene, not to mention the hippest population you could hang out with. This year, evenings in the ‘capital of cool’ are poised to get even more intoxicating. And if the maddening traffic has always been your concern, take heart: Bengaluru’s new high-speed Metro network now ensures that your favourite watering hole is easier to reach than ever. There’s only one thing you could say to that: ‘Chill maadi!’

Stockholm – The film release of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo might have prompted a new wave of Stieg Larsson fans to look for the grimy side of Stockholm. Unfortunately they’ll have to look quite hard, because Stockholm looks as perfect as it’s ever been. This is as seductive a capital city as can be imagined – cosy yet cosmopolitan, wilfully alternative and effortlessly picturesque. With its trendy design shops and bohemian bars, the island of Södermalm is one of the coolest kids on the block, while the stately parks of Djurgården make it the best island for an evening stroll. Admittedly Stockholm has never been a cheap date. But even if Stockholm leaves you with a lighter wallet, you’ll inevitably still leave it with a heavy heart.

I Love Lists! The Top YouTube Videos of 2010

Weird. I woke up this morning and made a list. Something reminded me of the World Cup and how much fun that was. I couldn’t resist whipping out my phone to write down my favorite memories of 2010.

Well, it appears the world agrees with me and the Year in Review is officially here. Every major site is releasing theirs and that term (“year in review”) is the new meme for them. Here are the search lists from google, yahoo, and bing (thanks Don Reisinger). Twitter also released a top trends of 2010 with an awesome infograph (and some analysis on “promoted trends”).

iStrategyLabs has the Mobile Year in Review.

All interesting if you love data, but if you want pure unadulterated awesomeness then check out YouTube’s top videos of 2010. These are more than data points they are funny-ass commercials, amateur silliness, ridiculous emotional outbursts, and more. They feel like the real culture of America and if you don’t watch them Sarah Palin will make fun of you.
