*Enjoy Handplanes turns bodysurfing into art

*Enjoy handplanes set themselves apart in the bodysurfing industry by turning their creations into one-of-a-kind art. It is amazing, the creativity and beauty they put into these little planes, with everything from DIY craft to pure artist illustrations, simple coloring and classic lines.

Of course, one has to mention that all of these handplanes are made from recycled and reused material. They use old, trashed surfboards and environmentally responsible resin for glassing. Definitely a part of the Zero Waste mantra.

Take a look and you might just be tempted to buy one. You can also join the *Enjoy community by visiting their vibrant Facebook group.

Surf event: Handplane Demo Day – try out new surf toys for free – (this Saturday)

Another demo day for y’all to come out and play with some surf toys. The poster says it all:

I’ve been to several of these and make sure to bring some surf fins (wetsuit optional with the water so warm). Of course, many people will be bringing their own homemade products for you to test out. Professionally crafted bodysurfing handplanes will definitely be there. Maybe some Paipo’s for bodyboarding.

The most fun had all summer – The Paipo Stokefest 2012

The Paipo (pronounced pie-po), a member of the family of ancient Hawaiian surfboards like the alaia and olo, is experiencing a resurgence and finding a place back in the lineup. The small, flat, wooden bellyboards have become so popular that The Paipo Society decided to create a summer gathering.

Over 75 stoked people attended the inaugural Paipo Stokefest, which took place on July 29, 2012 at Scripps Pier in La Jolla. Besides having plenty of paipos to test ride (thanks to Encinitas shapers Jon Wegener of Wegener Surfboards and Christine Brailsford of Whomp), it included other prone surfing craft such as handplanes, mats, alaias, and basically anything that can be propelled by a pair of swimfins.

Music Video: Days by The Drums (at the Handplane Hoedown)

On Saturday, May 5th, 2012, a gathering of fine individuals came together to play in the sun and shorebreak. A plethora of handplanes littered the beach and everyone was smiling and having fun. The video is a short view into what went down and some of the reasons why bodysurfing is so stoke heavy.

I’m in Vanity Fair and my first surfing photo

I don’t often talk about myself on this blog, but I can’t pass this up. This week I modeled in a geek fashion show (wearing Marc Jacobs) and had my first surfing action-shot. I’m pretty excited about both because the above photo was on the Vanity Fair website and the below photo is from a fun new group of surfers starting a DIY revolution in the sport.

That’s me bodysurfing with a handplane – a great photo from Shawn Parkin.

San Diego Surf Film Festival – beach clean-up and handplane demo

This weekend is the San Diego Surf Film Festival and if you’re attending, you might want to come to this community event.

On Saturday morning (8-10 AM) the festival is hosting a beach clean-up and handplane demo at La Jolla Shores.

There will be coffee, sweet treats, bodysurfing, and a give-away, in addition to the clean-up:

As a community driven event we’re inviting everyone to give a little back to the environment. Join us at La Jolla Shores for a beach clean up as part of the San Diego Surf Film Festival’s events!

The wonderful H2O Trash Patrol will be hosting with us and bringing buckets & trash pickers BUT if you have your own please BringYourOwnBucket!

Pannikin will be providing the coffee, there will be sweet treats from Healthy Creations, and we’ll be there with some Saturday stoke.

We’ll also be giving away four pairs of tickets to the film festival to the biggest trash collectors of the morning.

Look for the SDSFF and H2O Trash Patrol banners and a pop up tent set up on the grass near the north end of the La Jolla Shores parking lot.

The bodysurfing demo will be in association with *enjoy handplanes with all types of handplanes to try out.

Why are lifelong surfers trading in their boards for swim fins?

Why are all these lifelong surfers trading in their boards for swim fins? Board builder and alternative surf craft artisan Jon Wegener had this to say:

“As surfing becomes more complicated, futuristic and radical, there’s a backlash of people who just want to go and have fun. You want to find something simple, and it’s just easy to go and have fun with a handplane. We don’t have Pipeline and waves like that. We have mediocre beachbreaks, and this stuff is really fun in waves like that. You don’t need a lot … you get your best tube view on a head high wave when you’re bodysurfing, so it gives you some exhilaration in our waves.”

Ed Lewis of Enjoy Handplanes added, “We all grew up going to the beach, jumping in the water and playing around. For me, getting back into bodysurfing brings me back to being a kid, and you just kind of need that.”

Handplane Hoedown – try out new handplanes for bodysurfing

There is a new trend in surfing, well, rather bodysurfing. A group of environmentalists and shapers have begun crafting the most beautiful handplanes. These items are mini surfboards that you strap to your hand and get low in the water. They let you go fast, real fast and barrel on almost any wave.

Ed Lewis of Enjoy Handplanes describes how it works:

The second best part about Handplanes (first is how much fun they are) is that all of them are made out of recycled or sustainable material. Some are made out of wood, others out of broken and trashed boards.

A few of the companies are putting together a Handplane Hoedown to try out these things:

  • Saturday, May 5, 2012
  • Sunrise to ???
  • Southern California – San Clemente State Beach
  • Facebook Event Page

This is not a contest in any way, shape or form. Just a day of fun (ie. Fish Fry) to celebrate the handplane. NO POSTERS, NO BANNERS, NO SALES, NO T-SHIRTS. All word of mouth. This event is for everyone, from the first time garage made handplanes, to the super refined handplanes that are being sold in shops. If you’re into the food tray thing, bring that too. There will be representatives with Demo Planes from Hess, Surfcraft Co-op, Enjoy, and Brownfish, plus any and all other company’s are welcome to bring handplanes for the masses to try-out. Please spread the word via facebook, twitter, instagram, etc.
