The joy of bodysurfing & doing it dangerously in Tahiti

It’s not everyday that ESPN covers bodysurfing, here is Keith Malloy:

When I was a kid, my friends and I would go down to the beach and kind of camp all day 다운로드. When you’re a kid the experience of being at the beach is just as good as actually surfing. We would leave our boards on the beach, go out and just get slammed, pull into the barrel and look at each other 노래방 인기차트. You know, just that typical grom stuff.

Nine Lights founder Jeff Beck – improving surfboards by placing the stringer on the outside

Last weekend, while attending the Sunset Beach Handplane Demo Day, I met a fascinating surfboard shaper by the name of Jeff Beck Download slowly in time. Through his company, Nine Lights, Jeff is performing some incredible experiments that could change the surfing industry 다운로드. He had many of his boards on-hand to try for free, which is a regular part of the “demo day” ethos.

The first board that I tried, called the Slipper, perfectly represents Jeff’s unique design sense 윈도우 7 한글 무료 다운로드. The board has no stringer and instead uses a thin piece of wood on top (fiberglass bottom). According to Jeff, “when you remove the stringer it opens up all sorts of design possibilities 덴마 게임 다운로드. You can experiment with different shapes and sizes.” He said the wood top provides as much, or more, strength than the stringer would provide.

I took the board out to try him at his word 다운로드. Now, I’m 6-feet tall and weigh 180+ pounds. I pounded the hell out of that board because it is a modified Alaia, which means no fins, long and real thin (picture below) 다운로드. You have to pop-up quick and immediately start turning. The board never once gave or bent and felt stronger than my classic stringer boards. I definitely think Jeff is on to something, and it was so much fun to ride that it was my favorite of the event 다운로드.

The Slipper

To give you more insight into Jeff’s innovative thinking I want to tell you about his handplanes made out of aerospace airplane wings 다운로드. Made from the foam in the wings they are super-strong and amazingly lightweight. When you hold it in your hand all the weight you feel is in the leash 무협 소설 txt 다운로드. I tried one out and it definitely feels stronger than regular surfboard EPS foam (I kept smacking it because I couldn’t believe how strong it was) 위자드 오브 레전드 다운로드. An amazing way to recycle old airplanes and turn them into a fun ride.

Hand(air)planes

Overall, I was truly impressed by Jeff’s deep understanding of surfboard design, experimental concepts, and his environmental focus. The next time I’m in the market for a surfboard I will assuredly be checking out Nine Lights Surfboards.

Here are a few other designs from Jeff, and make sure to visit his website and like him on Facebook.

Snorkeling at Fisherman’s Cove in Lagune Beach, CA – where, what, how, & when

This morning I went snorkeling at Fisherman’s Cove in Laguna Beach for the third time. I like this spot a lot and so I want share it with my readers 다운로드. I’ll include a description, photos, maps, marine life, and links to other dive sites.

The cove is right off PCH in Laguna Beach, turn onto Cliff Drive and immediately look for street parking 다운로드. Most of the time I find a spot, but, if not, metered parking is available if you take the first left and go about 200 feet. That is also where the entrance to the Cove is 스틱맨 다운로드.

Suit up, grab your gear, and head towards the entrance. Go down the steps and take the concrete path all the way to the sand. There you will find a nice secluded beachfront with a lifeguard tower, a few beachgoers, SUP’ers, and a nice rocky landscape for you to explore 유튜브 영화 다운로드.

On the left, is a sheer rock face that you can launch in front of on small days. Keep a good distance away from the bluff and follow it out to sea 드롭 박스 오프라인 다운로드. It’s pretty shallow and you can see tons of fish, mollusks, anemones, and more.

In the middle, a bit offshore, is a rock cluster that is great to swim around 다운로드. You can see it from the shore with waves crashing against it. There are plenty of nooks and crannies to swim around and even dive into. Plus, it’s a great middle-point as you snorkel around the perimeter 에스라인 다운로드.

On the right, are a series or rocky outcroppings, like little peninsulas, that continue to jut out farther and farther as you swim out. These are ideal for snorkeling because an abundance of marine life hides in all of those mini-coves 토 도우 영상 다운로드. Follow the outcroppings all the way around to the next cove, which is my favorite route, or you can head over to the middle rock cluster mentioned above 오프라인 게임 다운로드.

It is usually best to go when the waves are small and the sunlight is good. This often changes but I’ve gone out at 9am, 12pm, and 3pm and had a blast 윈도우 10 순정 다운로드. It all depends on the conditions. You can scope it out before you go using Surfline for wave size, wind speed, and water temperature. Rockpile as the nearest spot.

The amount of wildlife is amazing. I’ve seen nearly everything you can in Southern California waters from the famous Garibaldi to a huge stingray, octopus, and colorful snails. For list of species you will find check out Cabrillo Aquarium’s marine life profiles.

Here are a few other sites with good coverage of Fisherman’s Cove:

Stay in the water everyday – Yoga for Surfers

A few years back, I read an article on surf legend, Gerry Lopez, and they asked him, “How are you able to stay in the water everyday?” His answer was simple, Yoga 다운로드.

When my first water injury hit I decided to try out his advice. He was dead-on. Engaging in a regular practice of Yoga has helped me to avoid innumerable injuries over the years and months 삼성 앱스 다운로드. I would even say it has improved my overall strength, agility, and endurance.

I highly recommend the following 10-minute videos: Yoga for surfers 위닝일레븐 다운로드. There are two episodes (6-minute, 4-minute) that cover 7 simple stretches. Do them at home for a while until you can memorize them, and then do them right before you go in the water 다운로드. It is the perfect warm-up for the all the surfing muscles, it gives you 10-mins to watch the waves (find where you wanna go out at), improves your balance, and, for me, calms me down before my session 다운로드.

Enjoy!

**PS – If you have a favorite Yoga or pre-surf routine, what is it?
