Two sustainable surfing events from Grain Surfboards – in York, Maine and Encinitas, California

If you’ve been following the evolution in surfing then you know it’s going green, big time. There are movies, controversies, and several surfboard companies. Grain surfboards is one of the leaders, their bio:

Began in the basement of a home minutes from the waves in York Beach, Maine. Mike LaVecchia combined his love of board sports with a passion for traditional wooden boat-building techniques to create works of art for riding waves. Brad Anderson joined as co-owner shortly after and, with the help of some friends, Grain has grown into a full-fledged surfboard manufacturer. Stated simply, we’re committed to building, promoting and riding surfboards that have less impact on the environment and more impact on your surfing. The Grain tradition includes reducing the impact of surfboard production by using locally harvested, sustainable-yield wood products, creatively reducing or reusing any waste left over, and developing techniques for employing greener materials.

Another huge element to this green revolution is the DIY movement, something that’s been in surfing since the beginning. While in the past that meant finding lighter foam materials and stiffer chemical compounds, today that means recycling everything. From the wood in an old skateboard, to the surfboard you broke in half, or even trash found on the beach. Combine these two movements, green surfboards and DIY, and you know just what these two events from Grain surfboards are about.   Continue reading

The most fun had all summer – The Paipo Stokefest 2012

The Paipo (pronounced pie-po), a member of the family of ancient Hawaiian surfboards like the alaia and olo, is experiencing a resurgence and finding a place back in the lineup. The small, flat, wooden bellyboards have become so popular that The Paipo Society decided to create a summer gathering.

Over 75 stoked people attended the inaugural Paipo Stokefest, which took place on July 29, 2012 at Scripps Pier in La Jolla. Besides having plenty of paipos to test ride (thanks to Encinitas shapers Jon Wegener of Wegener Surfboards and Christine Brailsford of Whomp), it included other prone surfing craft such as handplanes, mats, alaias, and basically anything that can be propelled by a pair of swimfins.

Music Video: Days by The Drums (at the Handplane Hoedown)

On Saturday, May 5th, 2012, a gathering of fine individuals came together to play in the sun and shorebreak. A plethora of handplanes littered the beach and everyone was smiling and having fun. The video is a short view into what went down and some of the reasons why bodysurfing is so stoke heavy.

Hoots and Shakas – trailer for the San Diego Surf Film Festival

Don’t get scared – the shouting is called a “hoot” and the thumb/pinky salute is called a “shaka” - and that was the theme for the 2012 San Diego Surf Film Festival, Hoots and Shakas.

Amy and I attended the festival and had a blast (you can see us at 0:37 in the video). We met all sorts of people, including the maker of this video Michael Emery (his company).

It was multiple days of stoke in the water (check out the seal waving to Michael) and in Bird’s Surf Shed watching surf films.

Free surf films from Billabong, Vans, Nike, and SuperBrand

Every summer a million surf movies come out and a few of them are free. For the summer of 2011 this included some high quality flicks from Billabong, Vans, Nike, and SuperBrand.

Each one is amazing, short (~30 mins), packed with sick music, and full of stoke. Things like skateboard cameos, anecdotes, worldwide adventures, and, of course, massive barrels.

The awesome part for this year is the girls flick from Nike. Everyone loves a surfer girl and these are incredible.

Without further ado, here they are, with massive props to the suits for bringing them to us..

Billabong – Blow Up

Vans – Get n Classic

Nike – Leave a Message

Superbrand – Sorry We’re Open

**Blow Up has an incredible soundtrack, here is a link to the full set list**
