A Pinterest account to protect the ocean – One World One Ocean

These photos come from One World One Ocean, started by “a family who has been making IMAX Theatre films for 35 years in far-off places like the top of Mt. Everest, the ice caves of Greenland, the Nile river, and the deep-ocean reefs of the South Pacific.”

Their goal is to inspire people about the ocean so they can protect it. These photos, from their Pinterest account, inspired me:

Sunday surf film – a short video about Italian surfer David Pecchi

“I based everything on that part of the ocean called the beach – the border between common civilization and dreams…I chose the dreams and it’s like living in Wonderland.”

Block10 productions is proud to present David Pecchi, eclectic and talented surfer of the Onde Nostre Crew, shot in Italy, California, Indonesia.

Ritratti Di Surf is a series of short videos about surfers, shapers, artists and other characters somehow connected to Onde Nostre and the Italian surf culture.

“Us Italians we don’t have waves but we have a heart, big like this, more. Even bigger than the brain. We have passion. We suffer, we wait for waves for months, and after a month of flat spell when we get a 2 foot wind swell. If you really like surfing, you paddle out and give it all you got.”

Our team of forecasters and scientists will break down all you could possibly want to know about a swell, including the three main meteorological ingredients that lead to significant swell events:

The storm’s size, movement, and wind.

Told in a slide show of 29 photos. Here is #3:

Surfing the mouth of Newport Harbor, 1938

Here is some rare footage from 1938 of a few big swells coming into Newport Harbor (Newport Beach, CA). The long jetties at the mouth of the harbor providing smooth seas haven’t been built yet, and the waves are looking really good!

The area was known as the “Waikiki of the west coast”. The Balboa side jetty was built using a railroad to bring in rocks from inland, and is under construction when this film was made. The CDM side jetty was constructed a few years later using rocks barged over from Catalina Island.

Here are a few screenshots from the footage showing the harbor mouth without the jetties you see there today.
