Photos of an abandoned cruise ship

Hidden in a remote bay of the Solomon Islands, the beached wreck of the German-built Liberian Cruise ship World Discoverer slowly rusts. There is nothing about the ship more fascinating than the story of its demise. Built in 1974, it served multiple owners faithfully for over 25 years. In April of 2000, the ship struck an uncharted reef formation just off the Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The captain radioed for assistance, and before long all passengers were shuttled off the World Discoverer by local ferries. Captain Oliver Kruess managed to nurse the ship into nearby Roderick Bay where she began to list until settling into her final resting place, where she still sits today.

What blog platform do the best bloggers in the world use?

WordPress is no doubt a very popular web publishing platform for blogs and other types of websites. But just how popular is it?

We just completed a study and found that WordPress is in use by 48 of the top 100 blogs in the world. This is an increase from the 32 we recorded three years ago.

Other developments since then include that custom blog publishing platforms are more common now, TypePad has all but disappeared from the top 100, Tumblr has made an entrance, and some companies really don’t want to spill the beans about what solutions they use.

The next five most popular blogging platforms are (number of top 100 blogs using them):

  1. Custom (14)
  2. Movable Type (7)
  3. Drupal (6)
  4. Gawker (5)
  5. Blogsmith (4)

So how many continents are there?

Last week I mentioned that CreativeMornings is now on 6 continents, which caused a bit of confusion over how many continents there are.

What I’ve since learned is that there are in fact different models being taught around the world. The seven-continent model is usually taught in China, India and most English-speaking countries. The six-continent combined-Eurasia model is sometimes preferred in the former states of the USSR and Japan. The six-continent combined-America model is taught in Latin America and in some parts of Europe including Greece, Portugal and Spain.

Technically, there are 4 distinct land masses (continents), but if you count the Suez and Panama canals as separating the land masses, then you have 6, and, finally, if you want to separate Europe from Asia with an arbitrary line you get to 7. – Wikipedia

Happy Birthday, Richard Feynman – the best mind since Einstein

Richard Feynman — Nobel-winning physics icon, curiosity champion, graphic novel hero, bongo drummer, wager-maker, no ordinary genius — would have been 94 today (May 11). To celebrate, here is one of Feynman’s most beloved classics, a 1964 lecture in which he distills with equal parts wit and wisdom the essence of the scientific method:

Foursquare adds “save this place” – create a to-do list of awesome places to visit

Now, when you see a friend’s foursquare check-in on Facebook and want to try that place too, you can click the new ‘Save this Place’ link and save it to your foursquare to-do list for later.

All it takes is one click, and you can do it right from Facebook (the save will appear on your Timeline, too, just like other apps you’ve connected to Facebook).

It’s an easy way to get ideas for future outings, and foursquare can do the work remembering them.

Cell phones for Senior Citizens

I love the idea of customizing cell phones for seniors. It is so annoying that they are often the target of over-priced landlines and other monthly service fees.

Here are some cell phones made specifically for seniors: big buttons, big displays, and not-so-fragile.
