If you’ve been following the evolution in surfing then you know it’s going green, big time. There are movies, controversies, and several surfboard companies. Grain surfboards is one of the leaders, their bio:
Began in the basement of a home minutes from the waves in York Beach, Maine. Mike LaVecchia combined his love of board sports with a passion for traditional wooden boat-building techniques to create works of art for riding waves. Brad Anderson joined as co-owner shortly after and, with the help of some friends, Grain has grown into a full-fledged surfboard manufacturer. Stated simply, we’re committed to building, promoting and riding surfboards that have less impact on the environment and more impact on your surfing. The Grain tradition includes reducing the impact of surfboard production by using locally harvested, sustainable-yield wood products, creatively reducing or reusing any waste left over, and developing techniques for employing greener materials.
Another huge element to this green revolution is the DIY movement, something that’s been in surfing since the beginning. While in the past that meant finding lighter foam materials and stiffer chemical compounds, today that means recycling everything. From the wood in an old skateboard, to the surfboard you broke in half, or even trash found on the beach. Combine these two movements, green surfboards and DIY, and you know just what these two events from Grain surfboards are about. Shape Your Own Paipo with Jon Wegener – York, Maine – Sep 6-7, 2012
Paipos come in all shapes and sizes, but ultimately all have one purpose, to propel you face first down the line and into every barrel left behind by stand up surfers. Each student will have their choice of building Jon’s paipo shape using paulownia with him as the instructor, or our Sea Sled shape using cedar with one of us as the instructor.

Camp Korduroy– Encinitas, CA – Oct 11-14, 2012
We are now pleased to offer a new 4 day board building class that will take place at Korduroy.TV headquarters in Encinitas. Students will have their choice of building any shape we offer as a HomeGrown Kit. Each student takes home his/her own board home ready for glassing and finishing on their own. Two Grain board builders will be available to guide students through the easy step-by-step process to ensure that each board that leaves the class will be a beautiful one-of-a-kind surfboard that will last a lifetime. We will learn basic surfboard design concepts, the simple application of steam to manipulate wood into shapes, adhesive applications, elements of edge tool work, glassing and effective use of epoxy. We will do our best to arrange glassing demonstrations in the evenings to help students with the techniques they will use if glassing at home. Learn more from a Korduroy.TV interview.
