I feel like this is one of those big moments that sputters into life – the end of ownership. At least, when it comes to DVDs.
This happened to music a few years back…I mean, who still thinks of owning music with CDs?
With Blu-ray sales slotted to decline in the next few years, the future is owning digital copies of movies not DVDs.
It will be interesting to see how this affects the ownership economy. So many people love their DVD collections, just as people loved their VHS collection and CD collections.
But, storing 20-30 digital movies can take up all your hard drive space, especially for high definition flicks. Whereas, keeping a few thousand songs on your computer didn’t hurt that much.
I bet there will be a race to super-size hard drives (especially on laptops) and build a business around movies in the cloud.

Apple adds 20th Century Fox movies to iTunes in the Cloud, all major studios now on board
Apple and Twentieth Century Fox have reportedly come to an agreement that will finally make the studio’s films available via iTunes in the Cloud. When Apple made movies a cornerstone of the cloud-based initiative (which lets customers redownload previous purchases) earlier this year, the company only had deals in place with four of the “big six” studios — Universal and Fox were the holdouts. It didn’t take long for Universal to sign on and add its films to iTunes in the Cloud, but apparently Apple needed more time to hammer out a viable solution with Fox.
Now we’re able to confirm that Twentieth Century Fox titles no longer carry a warning that they won’t be available from iTunes in the Cloud following purchase. You’re free to delete them from your PC/Mac or iOS device and redownload at will, and the same movies can also be streamed from an Apple TV.

If you’re needing to keep Mike & Mike an arm’s length away at all times, ESPN has refreshed its Radio app to help with just that. Now optimized to the iPad in addition to the iPhone and iPod touch, the software allows you to sort your listening habits by sports, teams and athletes that you follow.
The free version offers access to podcasts, the 20-minute SportCenter cycle, and offline listening for on-demand content.
The premium version — touting custom stations / playlists, live audio pause / rewind, myESPN personalization, alerts / push notifications and a few more gems to keep you well informed on the latest Red Sox debacle. Though, you’ll have to shell out $4.99 for the premium app and its 35 ESPN radio stations.
What about Android and WP7 devices, you ask? The folks in Bristol claim that apps for those platforms will arrive later this summer.

The free PBS KIDS Video app brings all your child’s favorite shows right to your iPad. Curious George, The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That, Dinosaur Train, SUPER WHY!, Sesame Street and Wild Kratts and are all here and ready to entertain and educate.
This month both Stanford and Open University reached 50 million downloads of their iTunes U content, a major milestone for online education.
Altogether, the service from Apple reached 700 million downloads in January 2012.
In subjects ranging from human behavior to linguistics, Stanford lectures…have been downloaded a whopping 50 million times.
The milestone, reached March 14, comes nearly seven years after Stanford became the first university to offer public access to campus lectures, concerts and courses through iTunes U.
“It shows there is a huge appetite for high-quality educational content,” said Brent Izutsu, the senior program manager for Stanford on iTunes U. “And that will only grow as more people look online to supplement their education.”
The most popular offerings are in engineering, where students can learn to build an iOS app or study quantum physics under one of the fathers of string theory, Leonard Susskind.
The Open University:
Open University is the first in Europe to reach more than one million active subscriptions through the iTunes U app since it launched back on 19 January. The University’s 52 courses add to the University’s extensive material on iTunes U which has now seen more than 50 million international downloads, with over 40,000 new downloads each day.
